A smart order router eases the process of investing by assessing the trading liquidity. It has its own set of rules that it follows stringently to execute the trade. Earlier equity market heavily relied on this technology, but seeing its advantages other trading platforms also adopted it. A smart order router (SOR) is an automated process used in online trading, which follows a set of rules that look for and assess trading liquidity. The goal of an SOR is to find the best way of executing a trade, taking advantage of opportunities across a range of trading venues through advanced algorithms. The increasing number of various trading venues and MTFs leads to a surge in liquidity fragmentation, when the same stock is traded on several different venues, so the price and the amount of stock can vary between them. Interactive Brokers offers its clients a software product referred to as "Smart" order routing. Smart Routing software continually scans competing markets and automatically routes orders directly to the best ECN or market center -- based on price but also taking into account factors such as the availability of automatic order execution. Each ECN and market center administers its own set of trading rules.
