The Natural Capital Asset Index (NCAI) is a composite index which tracks changes in the capacity of Scotland's terrestrial ecosystems to provide benefits to people.   It does not include the benefits from the marine environment (although a feasibility study assessing whether this is possible was carried out in 2019). An alternative appraisal of Scottish natural capital is available through Scottish Heritage’s (SNH) Natural Capital Asset Index (NCAI). The NCAI is a composite index which analyses nature's potential contribution to the wellbeing of Scotland's citizens. The Natural Capital Asset Index was 101.5 in 2016. This suggests that Scotland's stock of natural capital in 2016 is 0.6 percentage points higher than in 2015 and 0.1 percentage points higher than the base year 2006. The Natural Capital Asset Index, published by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH), states that after decades of decline until the 1990s, these ‘natural capital stocks’ have stabilised or improved slightly. Natural capital forms a vital part of our economy. In 2015, biomass was valued at £13,250 million, which makes up 5% of the Scottish natural capital stock. This percentage has increased in the most recent year. The Scottish agricultural biomass natural capital stock represents 15% of the UK value. This publication, prepared by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) for the Scottish Government, presents estimates of the quantity and value of ten services being supplied by Scottish natural capital.
